Daniel S. Elio, age 80, a longtime resident of Winchester, passed away on April 13, 2026. He was the beloved husband for 56 years of Ruth A. (Costa) Elio.
Born, raised and educated in Charlestown, Dan was the son of Carmen and Helen (Woods) Elio. He attended Charlestown High School and after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
Upon discharge, for more than 35 years, Dan dedicated himself to his work at the Massachusetts State House in the Legislative Document Room, where he built a reputation for integrity, dependability, and genuine connection. He left a lasting impression on colleagues and visitors alike, not only through his work ethic, but through the respect and warmth he showed to every person he encountered.
In addition to his public service, Dan was a lifelong entrepreneur. For over four decades, he owned and operated several small businesses at night and on the weekends, including Floorshine Cleaning Co., often balancing these ventures with that of attending his children's sporting events. Through these businesses, he created opportunities for many family members and friends, offering not just employment, but mentorship and support.
Dan spent his entire life putting others before himself. Whether it was caring for elderly neighbors, helping countless family members and friends through difficult times, or quietly stepping in wherever he was needed, his generosity knew no bounds. He had a special place in his heart for the elderly--dressing as Santa Claus to bring joy to nursing home residents during the holidays and faithfully delivering daily dinners for numerous years to a neighbor who had lost his wife. These were not one-time gestures, but reflections of who Dan was every day: selfless, dependable and deeply compassionate. His legacy is one of generosity, humility, and a life well lived in service to others.
Above all, Dan found his greatest joy in his family---especially his grandchildren. They were the light of his life, and nothing brought him more happiness than spending time with them, whether it was attending their baseball, hockey or lacrosse games or playing numerous card games with them during summer vacations in Chatham.
In addition to his devoted wife, Ruth, Dan is lovingly survived by his sons: Daniel Elio, Jr. and his wife Tricia, of Woburn, and Matthew Elio and his wife Kelly, of Hingham. He was the cherished grandfather of Brady Elio, Connor, Kathryn and Brennan Elio. He was the dear brother of Carmen Elio and his wife Elaine, of Osterville, and is also survived by 7 nieces and nephews.
