Obituary

Fraser MacFarland Walsh passed away on February 25, 2026, surrounded by his family, in Winchester, MA, one week after his 79th birthday. A fierce competitor with an intellect to match, he will be remembered for his passion for knowledge, his ability to find a solution to any problem, his loving dedication to his family, and his generous spirit. An avid supporter of his children and grandchildren, both academically and athletically, Fraser always made time to discuss a homework assignment, refine a statement in an essay, travel hundreds of miles to watch a regatta, or coach many baseball, soccer, and hockey games. Later in life, he enjoyed a handful of peanuts as a superfan spectator. Fraser also thoroughly enjoyed partaking in lively debates on a host of topics. By virtue of his eagerness to learn, he supported his perspective with his wealth of knowledge and his oft-used line: “know your facts!” Born February 19, 1947, on a boat in the Red Sea, he was the son of the late Myles A. Walsh, Jr. and Ruth Berg Walsh. His father’s career as a mining engineer facilitated a childhood living around the world, experiencing many cultures in different countries such as Afghanistan, Taiwan, Bolivia, amongst others. While abroad, in addition to learning through experience and interactions with people, he was home-schooled by his mother where the importance of learning about every possible subject matter was instilled in him. Painting, ornithology, global politics, chess, no subject matter was too great or small to attempt to master. He would spend his summers with his paternal grandparents in Bourne, MA near Monument Beach. Fraser attended Phillips Exeter Academy prior to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967 from Harvard at the age of 20. At Harvard, he earned varsity letters in 1965 and 1966, rowing for the lightweight crew. Fraser shared his passion for the sport of rowing by continuing as a coach for Harvard and MIT while earning a doctoral degree in engineering from Harvard. After completing his studies, Fraser remained in Cambridge to study, coach, and start a small research firm with friends from school. This firm later became Tracer Technologies, Inc. Based in Somerville, MA, the company manufactures cells and battery packs for oil exploration and naval research. Fraser also owned Atlantic Sales, a saw blade maintenance company, Royalton Farms, a cattle and pig producer, and Vermont Quality Meats, a butcher and distributor of beef and pork, the latter two located in South Royalton, VT. Fraser was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, relaxing in his red recliner chair at home in Winchester, felling trees in the woods of South Royalton, enjoying a sunset on the beach in Aruba, or conversing at the beloved “19th hole” at the Winchester Country Club. Fraser is survived by his wife, Lori Walsh, mother of Catherine (Noah), Landis (Leslie), Myles (Carla) and his stepdaughter Megan Grandon (Travis); his former wife Carol Walsh, mother of Fraser II (Janelle), Robert (Jill) and Lydia (Jordan); and grandchildren, Jaelyn, Fraser III (Trey), Ben, Maeve, John L., Caroline and Elizabeth (Miss Z). He was predeceased by his brother, Myles A. Walsh III and survived by his sister, Louise Throop of Sunol, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Fraser was the ultimate patriarch who will be deeply missed by his family. May we all celebrate many more sunsets together (Balvenie 16 in hand) in search of the elusive “green spot”. A wake is planned for 5-8PM on March 6 at the Costello Funeral Home in Winchester, MA. Interment will follow in a private ceremony for the family. Fraser strongly believed in the value of education and the opportunities that come with it. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the educational institution of your choice or to the Fraser Walsh Scholarship Fund benefiting Winchester High School graduates through the Winchester Scholarship Foundation, online at www.winchestersf.org
