James "Jim" Giles Stoll (1950 – 2025), 75 years old of Boston, Massachusetts on April 18, 2026.
Jim was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, in 1950 to Margaret Grisham and James Stoll, the younger brother to an older sister. He was known for his love of theater, art, golf, tennis, going to the movies (specifically seat P8 at his local AMC theater!) cooking and a good glass of scotch. He was also passionate about his career, helping hundreds of students and athletes throughout his years at Salem State University and as a private sports physiologist. He will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for his kindness and quick wit he brought into the lives of so many.
After receiving his PhD from UCONN, Jim dedicated over 34 years of distinguished service to the Salem State University community, establishing a legacy of student-centered leadership and institutional growth. His career was defined by a steady ascent through the administrative ranks from Director of Counseling to Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, and always a steadfast commitment to the holistic development of the student experience.
Jim’s career is marked by the "Commonwealth Citation" and the "Distinguished Service Award," reflecting a professional journey defined by excellence, integrity, and an enduring commitment to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and its students.
In his early career, at Wooster College, Jim met Nancy (1949-2025), his partner in both life and passion for higher education. They shared a love for travel, and their adventures took them across France, Italy, Amsterdam, and beyond, where they collected art pieces that reflected their journeys. They also cherished time spent at their Cape house in Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts, and later at their condo in Chandler, Arizona, where they enjoyed retirement and escaped the cold Boston winters.
Jim and Nancy have two beloved children, Gregory Stoll (Juliana Stoll) of Winchester, Massachusetts and Lindsay Mistretta (Xavier Mistretta) of San Diego, California. Jim cherished his time as a grandfather (G-ta) to Amelie Mistretta and newly born, Harrison Stoll.
A private family service will be held this summer for both Jim and Nancy. In lieu of flowers, donations to American Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
