Obituary

John B. Roll “Jack” died peacefully while on hospice at Winchester Hospital on July 1, 2026, surrounded by his wife and children.

He was born on July 23, 1935 in Chicago,Illinois and spent his childhood in Marine City, Michigan, where he met his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Moore. They enjoyed morethan 66 years of marriage and raised five children together. Jack is survived by hiswife, Peggy, and his children Margie, John, Carolyn, and Susie. He is predeceased by his daughter, Sarah.

After his undergraduate degree from the University of Detroit, he earned a PhD in chemical engineering from Purdue University and then moved his growing family to Rockville, Maryland.

He served two years as a Chemical Engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers, working at the Atomic Energy Commission where he received a citation for outstanding performance.

He then began his career in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, working for Westinghouse, initially in the Nuclear Fuel Division and then with the Environmental Systems Division. He was an early pioneer in energy conservation and followed his career, moving to Winchester, MA in 1977 as an energy consultant. He continued his work in the energy industry and by 1981 became the first Executive Director of the non-profit Mass-Save corporation, then a utility-sponsored residential energy conservation program, and continued as ED for 6 years.

Jack served as a member of Winchester Town Meeting and on the town’s Finance Committee. He was deeply involved in several community organizations in Winchester including Winchester Jumelage, as President of The Griffin Museum of Photography, as Warden for six years at the Parish of the Epiphany church, as co-chair with Peggy of the Winchester Hospital Capital Campaign for the Day Surgery Center at 620 Washington Street, and the Jenks Center. In 2018, Jack and Peggy were named Winchester Citizens of the Year.

Additional interests included the Executive Service Corps, the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Massachusetts, where he was Chairman of the Finance and Benefits Committee, and the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem.

Over the years Jack enjoyed golfing, skiing, sailing on Boston Harbor and the Maine coast, and travelling in France, where he found distant relatives.

He was deeply loved by his 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, and he will be greatly missed.

In lieu flowers, donations may be sent to Parish of the Epiphany or Winchester Hospital.

A memorial service at Parish of the Epiphany will be held at a later date.
