Obituary

Nirupoma "Niru" Khaund, daughter of late Ratneswar and Surama Borthakur, was born on February 2nd, 1939 in Shillong, India and died in Winchester Hospital on May 21, 2022. She came to the U.S. in 1957 to join her fiancé, Profulla Chandra Khaund, and they married in Jackson, MO. After her husband graduated from the University of Missouri with his master's degree, they both moved to Pittsburg, PA and eventually MA where they lived in Winchester for 54 years. Niru worked at an insurance company and later at the civil engineering company owned by her husband, Green International Affiliates Inc. Niru was incredibly talented, charismatic and creative. During her youth, she trained in Bharatnatyam and Kathak, two of the most intricate forms of Indian dance. Twice weekly she sang Assamese and Bengali songs for the Indian government radio station, All India Radio, during peak hours and was in high demand within the Assamese community to perform at cultural programs. She was a skilled and self-taught watercolorist and needleworker. During a national All India drama competition, Niru represented her state of Assam and proudly won in the category of Best Actress. Niru and Profulla were married for 65 years. She is survived by three children, Dipak Chandra Khaund, Rollin Chandra Khaund and his wife Kimberly Khaund, and Nina McGeehan and her husband John McGeehan, one grandson, Paul James McGeehan, her youngest brother Dilip Borthakur and his family, and several cousins, nieces and nephews who fondly remember her for her generous and loving personality. Niru was cremated along with her beloved husband
