Robert J. “Bob” Walsh, a proud son of Irish immigrants who devoted his life to family, community, and the cause of Irish heritage in America, passed away on April 14, 2026, at the age of 94. He was the beloved husband of Rita F. (Allen) Walsh, whose death in 2008 left an absence he carried with grace until the end of his own long life.
Born in Winchester, Massachusetts, Bob was the son of Thomas D. Walsh, a native of Cork City, Ireland, and Alice (Mullen) Walsh, who came from Ballyconneely, Ireland. He was raised in Winchester, where he attended St. Mary’s School and Winchester High School. As a young man he worked at the Beggs & Cobb Tannery in Winchester before going on to Boston Edison. He then built a long and successful career as a chemical engineer at Polaroid in Waltham.
Together, Bob and Rita raised seven children and created a family life defined by warmth, faith, and a love of gathering. Their home in Gloucester became a beloved retreat where three generations of Walshes made memories. Bob and Rita also shared a deep passion for travel, especially to Ireland, which was always close to both their hearts.
Above all else, Bob was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He delighted in watching them grow, cheered their every milestone, and drew immeasurable joy from the family that he and Rita built together. They were, in his own words, his greatest achievement.
Bob took his Irish heritage seriously and joyfully. He and Rita traveled to Ireland together, tracking down distant relatives and deepening ties to the land his parents had left behind. Well into his nineties, he remained in regular contact with countless cousins across Ireland. He threw himself into the Boston-area Irish community with characteristic energy, serving as President and Life Member of the Knights & Ladies of St. Finbarr — Cork Club, the St. Brendan’s County Kerry Club, and the Irish American Malden Club. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (Div. 14, Watertown), the Boston Police Emerald Society, the Knights of Columbus Council 4978 (Burlington, MA), the Stoneham Auxiliary Police, and the Reading Rifle and Revolver Club. Through these organizations, Bob formed some of the closest and most enduring friendships of his life — bonds forged over a shared love of Ireland, its people, and its traditions, and kept alive through decades of good company.
Bob was especially proud of his role in the Friends of Ireland Group, which worked to pass the Donnelly Visa legislation in 1987. By rallying support from Massachusetts politicians — including Congressmen Brian Donnelly, Tip O’Neill and Senator Ted Kennedy — the group helped create a program that enabled more than 25,000 Irish citizens to obtain U.S. Green Cards. It was a cause that combined his gift for organizing, his devotion to his heritage, and his belief that people deserved the chance his own parents had been given.
He is survived by his loving children: Kathleen Cardone and her husband Lawrence of Chelsea; Eileen Graves and her husband David of Gloucester; Colleen Barrett and her husband Thomas of Rockport; Sharon Sanchez and her husband Edward of Duxbury; Sandra Corrao and her husband Charles of Gloucester; Andrea Walsh of Winchester; and Robert Walsh and his late wife Kristen, of Gloucester; his devoted grandchildren: Maria, Paul, Christopher, Michael, Theresa, Nicholas, Andrew, Kimberly, Matthew, Zachary, Adam, Victoria, Benjamin, Rachael, Emily, Anthony, Allison, and Evelyn; his great-grandchildren: Lorenzo, Natalia, Mason, Brayden, Jacob, Clara, Gabriel, Marley, Sawyer, Konnor, and Ronin, and his dear siblings: Mary Walsh of Stoneham; Sarah Kiely and her late husband Jeremiah of Gloucester; the late Thomas Walsh and his late wife Mary; and the late Alice Cullen and her late husband James. Bob is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory may be made to Adaptive Sports New England (www.adaptivesportsne.org), a non-profit organization founded by Bob’s nephew, dedicated to increasing participation in sports among New England youth and adults who have visual or mobility impairments.
