Sean Francis
O'Loughlin
d. Jun 30, 2026
Sean Francis O’Loughlin, age 64, of Winchester, passed away suddenly on June 30, 2026. He was the son of the late Paul and Mary (Greaney) O’Loughlin and was the beloved husband of Mary Frances (Grant) O’Loughlin and loving father of Francis Paul (Frank) O'Loughlin. He is also survived by a brother, Desmond O’Loughlin.
Born in Newton, Sean grew up in Tewksbury and Woburn and was a graduate of Woburn Memorial High School. He was an avid athlete in high school and college, playing on the football and tennis teams at Woburn Memorial High School and the tennis team in college.
He received his bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in geology from Salem State University. In his last semester he participated in a Geology Department trip to the Southwest where they visited Bryce Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Zion Canyon and the Grand Canyon which Sean was able to hike all the way down and back up, in one day.
Sean loved teaching tennis to students of all ages. He was the Winchester Boys Tennis Coach from 1988 to 1996, Girls Tennis Coach at Concord Academy in 1999, and the Brookline Boys Tennis Coach until 2002. During the early spring of 2006, Sean traveled to Moscow to participate in youth tennis clinic. In 2016 Sean accompanied Nick Bolleteri on Nick’s only visit to Ireland.
Sean also served as Junior Varsity Soccer Coach at Winchester High School under Gene Bouley from 1988 to 1995 and head coach of the Girls Soccer Team at Arlington Catholic High School from 1998 to 1999.
Travel was something Sean loved to do. His first oversees travel experience was at age 3 to visit his grandparents’ families in Galway and Donegal, Ireland. In the summer of 1985, he and his Kawaski traveled to visit friends in Northern Ireland and Sean worked with a group that was building a retreat center for both Catholic and Protestant children affected by ‘The Troubles.’ Last year Frank took him to Honolulu where they spent a great deal of time at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) and Pearl Harbor. It was a very meaningful trip for them.
Sean suffered a severe stroke on March 4, 2020, that paralyzed his left side. He received treatment immediately and had worked since that point to keep the muscles on his left side strong, with the support of the staff at Spaulding Rehab. Being such a good athlete, he worked out constantly, exercising to build back the nerve paths on his left side.
Always generous with his time, Sean would respond to any request for help from a friend or acquaintance.
Sean is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Mary Frances, his son, Frank, his brother, his brother-in-law, Terry Grant, his sisters-in-law Anne Marie Aiken (Jeff), Margaret Grant, Maura Shawhan (Ken) and Patricia Jafari (Mehdi) and many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sean’s memory may be made to Catholic Relief Services (crs.org) or the Irish International Immigrant Center, Attn: Fund Development, One State Street, Suite 800, Boston, MA 02109. www.iiicenter.org
