Obituary

Walter Toporzycki, a longtime resident of Woburn, passed away on May 30, lovingly surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of 41 years of Mary Anne (Manzene) Toporzycki.

Born in Syracuse, New York, he was the son of the late Walter and Grace (Aiello) Toporzycki. He was raised and educated in Syracuse and was a graduate of Syracuse University with a degree in music.

Walt, as he was affectionately known, worked as a music teacher in Syracuse. As a lifelong musician, professional percussionist and drummer he was a member of the Syracuse and the Utica Symphonies. His family shared that, as the consummate musician, his spare time almost always involved music. His portable snare pad was easily accessible, and he liked playing at any time. However, he was also very handy around the house, could fix just about anything and would tackle just about any home repair project. Lastly, he loved playing fetch and tug-of-war with the family dog, Apollo.

He and Mary Anne relocated to Massachusetts in the 1980s when she pursued a job opportunity. It was then that he transitioned from the music industry and delved into computer engineering, where he spent the remainder of his career.

In Woburn, Walt loved the community he now called home and where they raised their son. He was frequently involved with Peter’s baseball activities and would regularly practice with him after finishing work.

In addition to his devoted wife Mary Anne, Walt leaves behind his son Peter Toporzycki and his wife Ashley of Berkeley, CA; his dear sister Mary Ellen Sauro and her husband Duane of Baldwinsville, NY; his brother-in-law Steve Manzene and his wife Anne of Liverpool, NY; his cherished nephews and niece Joseph McCaffrey, Grace Giarrusso and her husband Paul, Bill Manzene and Jeffrey Manzene; and his beloved great-niece and great-nephews Carmela Giarrusso, Giovanni Giarrusso and Angelo Giarrusso.

Visiting Hours will be held in the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Thursday, June 4, from 4-7PM, and again on Friday, June 5 at 11AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester at 12 noon.
